VARICOSE VEINS |
Quotation |
“The human leg is a source of delight. It carries you weight and governs your height.”
Definition |
Dilated and tortuous superficial veins of the lower extremities, with incompetent venous valves (usually following periods of high venous pressure due to pregnancy, heavy weight lifting or prolonged standing), permitting reverse flow when dependent.
Prognosis |
Usual course is one of chronicity, but treatment gives favourable results, with relief of symptoms.
General Measures |
Use of elastic stockings from proximal foot up to below the knee whenever there is much standing and best put on before getting off the bed in the morning Frequent rest periods and elevation of the leg whenever possible. Avoidance of tight girdles, and other restrictive clothing. Walking regimen after sclerotherapy.
Advice to Patient |
Do not sit for long periods with the feet hanging down. Sclerotherapy may need to be repeated after a few years.
Follow Up |
Periodic check when on non-surgical therapy.
Prevention |
In occupations requiring standing for long periods as in the case of policeman, industrial workers advice could be given about the need for frequent resting on a stool or a chair, wearing of elastic stockings foot exercises, and elevation of feet at every possible chance.
